Here are some answers to commonly asked questions about The Prophecy Box.

1. For what age is this book appropriate?

Because of some subject matter (loneliness, survival, death of a parent), I would say that 10 years old is youngest age. Of course, it is really something that parents should decide (after all, I met a 9-year-old girl who read the book and loved it).

2. Why did you write a young adult novel?

For a couple of reasons. I read an interview with Robin Jones Gunn (author of the popular the Christy Miller series) awhile ago when I first started to write and she said that she was surprised at how many inappropriate teen books there were available for girls. I took what she said to heart because there are books out there that promote gossip, sexuality, and selfishness. I believe girls should be reading about wholesome values, like true beauty, lasting friendship, and developing character identity. I am happy that The Prophecy Box is appropriate for teen (and tween) girls. Also, I wanted to tell a story that my sister would read. I have always been one to devour books and she approaches books carefully. Hopefully, she will be able to get through this novel without grief.

3. Why did you self-publish? What company did you go through? Would you recommend them?

I chose to self-publish for two reasons: 1) because when I finished NaNoWriMo, I was granted a free proof copy of my book; and 2) because I tried to go the conventional way (find a publishing agent to submit the manuscript to a publishing house, etc.) and it didn't work out so well.

The free proof copy I received was through CreateSpace, which is a subsidiary of Amazon.com. Personally, I like them better than Lulu (I researched!) because their print-on-demand prices are a lot lower.

CreateSpace was great! The only downside was the ordering time, which can be a long turn-around.
